A quick, honest answer first: BPP does not charge for contractor registration. What people usually pay for is something else entirely.
BPP's own position
BPP's guide is direct about this. Free to register on federalcontractors.bpp.gov.ng. That covers creating an account, completing your company profile and printing your IRR once it is approved.
There is no separate government charge layered on top of that process.
What actually costs you something
Registration costs time, not money, for every contractor, consultant and service provider doing or seeking business with the Federal Government. Each one needs to pull together a few things first: CAC details, tax information, director records, financial capacity, and a history of completed jobs.
For a business with that information already organised, the process is mostly data entry. It takes an afternoon, not a week. For one starting from scratch, gathering the details is the real cost, not the form itself.
Why people still get charged
Some businesses pay a consultant or agent to handle the registration for them. That fee pays for someone else's time. It pays for their comfort with the portal. It is not a charge BPP itself sets.
There is nothing wrong with paying for that help, if it suits you. The problem starts when that payment gets called an official BPP charge. BPP's own materials say plainly that no such charge exists.
What a paid service can legitimately help with
- Gathering and organising the documents your profile needs.
- Filling in the profile accurately, especially the financial and technical sections.
- Following up if a submission needs correcting before the IRR can print.
None of that changes the underlying fact: the portal itself does not bill you, and no legitimate helper can point to a government invoice that says otherwise.
Protecting yourself
- Go directly to federalcontractors.bpp.gov.ng rather than through a third-party link.
- Treat any request for an "official registration fee" as a red flag.
- If you do pay for help, be clear with yourself that it is for a private service, not a government charge.
- Keep your own login details rather than handing full control of your account to someone else indefinitely.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a fee must exist because other agency processes charge one.
- Registering through an unofficial link instead of the portal directly.
- Paying repeatedly for "renewal" of a registration that does not itself expire on a fixed fee cycle.
- Not checking BPP's own guide before accepting a third party's claim about cost.
For the registration steps themselves, see how to register as a BPP contractor, and for what a false declaration in that process can cost you, BPP's false declaration sanction. The tender compliance certificates checklist covers the certificates that sit alongside your BPP record in a federal bid.
