If your licence falls due while you live abroad, the first question is whether you can renew without travelling. The short version: you can prepare the paperwork ahead, but the licence needs you in the room.
The short answer
FRSC's FAQ is clear: the applicant must attend in person. That answer covers sending someone to a processing centre with your documents.
Biometric capture and testing happen at the processing centre you chose on the form. So a renewal is one in-person visit, and nobody can do it in your place.
| Before you travel | At the processing centre |
|---|---|
| Check the expiry date and the renewal window | Biometric capture, in person |
| Start the application on the FRSC portal, and choose how to pay | Whatever else FRSC asks for on the day |
What you can sort out before you travel
The application starts on the FRSC portal at nigeriadriverslicence.frsc.gov.ng. An application can be edited until it is paid for, and unpaid applications are purged after three months.
Payment options include online by card, at a bank, by POS at the licence centre, or by NetPostPay eWallet. Whether a foreign card works is a question for your bank.
If the portal is open to you from where you live, starting the form early may leave less to do on the ground. How the FRSC licence portal works walks through it.
Renewal or re-issue?
They are different options on the portal. Renewal is for an expired licence, or one inside the renewal window. Re-issue is for a lost, stolen or still-valid licence being changed.
If yours is lost, use the Re-issue of Driver's Licence option on the FRSC portal. You need your existing licence number, so track it down before you start. Replacing a lost driver's licence covers the steps.
Timing the trip
The renewal window opens from 30 days before the expiry date. If your licence expires while you are abroad, that decides the earliest date you can renew. Plan the trip for after the window opens.
Do not count on renewing far ahead of a visit. FRSC's FAQ answer offers no route that skips the visit. Work out your next trip and plan around it. A checklist before you renew your licence covers expiry, term and payment.
What it costs at FRSC
FRSC lists ₦15,000 for a three-year licence and ₦21,000 for five years. A licence can hold up to three classes, and each class is charged separately. Payment channels may add charges.
The driver's licence renewal guide covers the full cost.
Common mistakes
- Sending a relative to renew for you.
- Believing anyone who says the biometric step can be skipped. FRSC's own answer is that the applicant attends.
- Arriving in Nigeria before the renewal window opens.
- Starting a renewal for a lost licence. That is a re-issue.
If you are relocating, documents to renew before moving abroad covers the wider list. The diaspora and life events hub has the rest of the series.
