A tax clearance certificate is easy to photocopy and easy to alter. That is exactly why a careful bank or tender board wants to check one, not just glance at the signature and move on.
What you can actually check depends on which authority issued it.
Why a bank or tender board wants to check, not just see it
A TCC carries real weight in a bid or a loan decision, which makes it worth forging for anyone tempted to cut corners. A reviewer who only checks that a document exists, rather than that it is accurate, is an easy target.
Checking properly takes a few extra minutes and closes off that risk almost entirely.
State verification portals that exist today
Two state authorities publish a direct online check. FCT-IRS runs one at fcttaxportal.fctirs.gov.ng/tccver.aspx, and Edo State's revenue service runs one at eras.eirs.gov.ng/VerifyTCC/List. Both let you confirm a certificate issued by that specific office.
If the certificate in front of you was issued by either of these bodies, this is the fastest, most reliable check available.
What to cross-check by eye
Where no portal covers the certificate you are holding, work through it manually:
- The years listed should match the three years of assessment before the current year, with no unexplained gap.
- The Tax ID and company name should match the applicant's other documents exactly.
- The issuing office named on the certificate should be one that plausibly handles that company's file.
- The certificate should still be within date, since it does not run for a fixed twelve months.
None of these checks are foolproof on their own, but together they catch most of the obvious problems.
The federal gap and who to call instead of a portal
We could not confirm a public online verification portal for the federal TCC issued by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), formerly FIRS. That does not mean no check is possible, only that it is not a self-service page in the way the FCT and Edo examples are.
For a federal certificate, the safer route is contacting the tax office named on the document directly, rather than relying on the paper alone. Our checklist of documents for a TCC application shows what a genuine application actually has to produce, which is useful context when judging whether a certificate looks right.
What a filing service's own delivered file offers
A filing service does not check your standing with the NRS or a state board; that job stays with the agency. What Docufy adds on top is its own delivered PDF, with a verify link showing you hold the exact file issued to your account, which is a different, narrower kind of assurance than agency verification.
If you are applying fresh rather than checking an existing document, the tax clearance certificate page is where a vetted partner firm can take on the filing, and our NRS tax hub has more on the wider process.
