Quick answer

Edo, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Kano and Ogun each run their own state internal revenue service, with their own website: eirs.gov.ng, akirs.ak.gov.ng, irs.en.gov.ng, kirs.gov.ng and ogirs.ogunstate.gov.ng. Each collects personal income tax from residents of that state alone.

Five more states, five more portals. If your state is one of these, this is where to start.

Why the portal address is the first thing to get right

A search for a state tax authority throws up old news articles, third-party "help" sites and the occasional outdated link before the real portal. Starting from a confirmed address avoids handing your details to the wrong site.

Every portal below is the state authority's own site or is clearly linked from the state government's official pages.

Five state portals at a glance

State Authority Website
Edo EIRS eirs.gov.ng
Akwa Ibom AKIRS akirs.ak.gov.ng
Enugu ESIRS irs.en.gov.ng
Kano KIRS kirs.gov.ng
Ogun OGIRS ogirs.ogunstate.gov.ng

Each of these follows the tax authority of the state where the employee lives. Living in one of these five states, whatever state you work in, is what brings you under that state's authority rather than another.

What every one of them is for

What each portal offers differs by state. Two of the five list specific functions worth knowing before you start; for the other three, this guide confirms only the official site.

EIRS links to both a self-service area and TCC verification from its home page. OGIRS's own site lists individual registration and a "Verify TCC" function among its pages. Beyond that, check the exact menu of services on each site directly.

AKIRS, ESIRS and KIRS confirm their own identity clearly on their home pages, including a physical address in some cases, which is a reasonable first check that you are on the right site at all before entering any personal details.

An employee's PAYE still reaches whichever of these authorities through their employer's monthly remittance. A self-employed resident has no employer to deduct it, the same situation covered in personal income tax for the self-employed.

What none of them replace

None of these portals replace your own annual return. Every taxable person must file a return each year, even if no tax is due, in force since 1 Jan 2026, and that applies whichever of these five states you live in. Registering on the portal is a step toward filing, not the filing itself.

They also do not replace each other. A resident who moves from, say, Enugu to Kano deals with Kano's authority rather than Enugu's, and should not assume the old registration carries over.

What to do if your state is not listed here

This guide, together with our separate guides to Kaduna, Oyo, Rivers and Delta, covers nine states. For any other state, search for its own internal revenue service and confirm the result before entering any details.

For the deadline that applies wherever you live, see filing your individual annual tax return, and browse the rest of this series in the PAYE and state tax hub.

Questions people ask

Do all five states run the same kind of portal?

Each state runs its own site, so the layout and exact features differ. What they share is the same underlying rule: the tax authority of the state where the employee lives.

My state isn't on this list. Where do I look?

Search for '[your state] internal revenue service' and confirm the result ends in .gov.ng or is clearly linked from your state government's own site. We cover Kaduna, Oyo, Rivers and Delta in their own guides.

Does registering on one of these portals replace my annual return?

No. Registration opens your file. Every taxable person must file a return each year, even if no tax is due, filed separately every year. See filing your individual annual tax return.

Can I use any of these portals if I do not live in that state?

No. Each one is for residents of its own state, following the tax authority of the state where the employee lives. Living in a different state means a different portal applies to you.
