Why there is no single renewal date
It would be convenient if every vehicle document expired on the same day each year. That is not how it works.
Your vehicle licence, your roadworthiness certificate and your insurance are three separate products, from different issuers, each running on its own cycle. Renewing one does not touch the others.
What a roadworthiness certificate's validity tells you
For a commercial vehicle, Lagos VIS sets the certificate's validity at six months. That rule also reaches a pick-up or a bus registered as private, once the vehicle itself is commercially designed.
VIS's own FAQ does not state a validity period for an ordinary private car. Rather than guess at a figure here, treat the date printed on your own certificate as the one that matters, and work backwards from it.
Why there is no grace period to lean on
Once any of these papers expires, VIS says no grace period follows. Its FAQ also describes cameras that can flag and fine a vehicle once its papers lapse. Our grace period post covers this rule in full.
This removes the usual excuse for cutting a renewal close. A date that has passed has passed, whatever the reason.
Building your own renewal order
Since no single date covers everything, build your own list instead. Note when your vehicle licence, roadworthiness certificate and insurance each expire, and treat all three as separate, firm deadlines.
Renewing the vehicle licence itself needs no office visit, provided your insurance and roadworthiness certificate are current at the time. That makes it worth checking those two first, before your licence renewal date arrives, rather than after.
Your number plate sits apart from this list. It does not run on a renewal cycle the way these three documents do, unless you are replacing one that is lost or damaged.
Renewing without guessing
Pay online at portal.autoreg.ng where the transaction allows it, or handle it in person at any of 140 licensing stations, designated banks, or online at portal.autoreg.ng. Either way, start before the expiry date, not on it.
A reminder on your phone, set the day you receive each new document, is a simple way to stay ahead of all three dates without relying on memory.
Common mistakes
Assuming one renewal resets or extends another is the most common mistake, when each paper is entirely independent. Waiting for a single "renewal season" that does not exist is another way people fall behind.
Leaving your roadworthiness certificate or insurance to lapse, then being surprised the vehicle licence renewal is not straightforward, is a third mistake. Keep all three current together, not in sequence after a problem appears.
