A bank, school or embassy that asks you to "verify" your Lagos affidavit means one specific page: the Lagos Judiciary's own verification lookup. Here is how it works.
What the verification page checks
The Lagos Judiciary runs this check at lagoscomis.lagosjudiciary.gov.ng/verification. It covers more than affidavits: external affidavits, process affidavits, forms and letters, and certified true copies (CTCs) all go through the same lookup.
Every check works the same way, by reference number, not by name or date.
What you need before you start
Find the reference number printed on your affidavit. It usually sits near the signature block or a barcode area, depending on how the document was produced.
Type it exactly as printed. A single wrong character, including a mixed-up letter and number, is enough to return no result.
Why an institution asks for this
A bank, embassy or school cannot easily tell a genuine affidavit from a well-made fake by eye. Asking you to verify it online, or checking it themselves, gives them a quick way to confirm the affidavit is real.
This is separate from anything Docufy does. Docufy does not verify documents with a court or agency; it only collects your details in the right format for a partner firm to file.
An affidavit is also easier to check than some other documents, since Lagos and the Federal High Court both publish an online lookup by reference number, rather than leaving verification to a phone call or a guess.
What a failed check usually means
Most failed checks come down to a typing error, not a fake document. Re-enter the reference number carefully, checking zero against the letter O and one against the letter I in particular.
If a careful retry still fails, contact the court registrar that issued the affidavit. Staff there can confirm whether the record exists and whether the reference you have matches it.
Keep the physical or downloaded copy of the affidavit too. Whoever is asking you to verify it may want to compare the printed reference number against what the lookup shows, side by side.
Common mistakes
- Typing the reference number from memory. Copy it directly from the document instead.
- Assuming a failed check proves fraud. A typo is far more common than a forged affidavit.
- Verifying the wrong document type. Confirm you are checking an affidavit, not a similarly numbered form or letter.
If you have not yet sworn your affidavit, how to swear an affidavit on LagosCoMiS walks through the steps that lead to a reference number. Our courts and affidavits hub links related reading, and where and how affidavits work covers the process outside Lagos too. A vetted partner firm can prepare an affidavit of loss if you need a new one filed.
