Paying is not the last step in the process. A little confirmation afterwards saves a nasty surprise months later, when the record matters most.
What the portal gives you the moment you pay
Once payment for the return, filed on Form CAC 19, goes through, the portal gives an acknowledgement for that specific filing. Keep this, along with any reference number, rather than relying on your bank statement alone as proof.
This acknowledgement covers the one return you just filed. It is not a general certificate of good standing for the company as a whole, and a bank will not always accept it as one.
How the company's record actually updates
The company's filing history then updates to reflect the new return. If it does not show right away, check again after a short while before treating it as a problem.
Once updated, that year stops counting as missing for any other CAC process that checks the company's history.
Confirming the update yourself
Do not assume the update happened just because payment went through cleanly. The CAC public search on icrp.cac.gov.ng shows the company's actual filing history, the direct way to confirm the new return is on record.
This is worth doing every time, not just when something feels off. A quick check now is faster than untangling a dispute later, once the year in question is further back in memory.
What a bank or tender desk will accept as proof
An acknowledgement of one filing is not always what a bank or tender board wants to see. Many ask for a status report instead, a separate paid CAC document costing ₦5,000, which speaks to the company's standing more broadly than a single return does.
Know which one you are being asked for before you request either. They answer different questions, even though both come from the same portal and the same underlying filing history.
If nothing seems to have changed after a week
Check the CAC public search on icrp.cac.gov.ng again before assuming the worst. A second look after a few more days is worth doing before you conclude the return never registered.
If a genuine gap remains after that, go back through the filing itself rather than paying again for the same year on the assumption that a second payment will fix a record that never updated. Our guide to filing CAC annual returns online covers the steps if you need to retrace them, and checking whether your returns are up to date goes deeper on reading the search result. For the fees involved, the CAC annual return cost guide is the place to check, and you can always start your CAC annual return for a year still outstanding.
