Overview

What is New Vehicle Registration?

A vehicle bought new, imported or used for the first time in your name has to be registered before it is legal on the road. Registration gives it a plate number and the vehicle licence, and it records you as the owner. It is handled through the licensing office in your state, with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) behind the vehicle licence.

On Docufy you say how the vehicle was bought, enter its chassis and engine numbers, make, model and year, and add the owner’s details. You upload the purchase receipt, insurance certificate and the owner’s ID and photograph, and customs papers if it was imported. A vetted partner firm files the registration, and you follow every step on your phone.

Who needs this

Anyone who has just bought a vehicle, whether new from a dealer, imported or used for the first time in their name. Renewing the licence of a vehicle that is already registered is a different filing.

Requirements

What you'll need.

Have these ready. Snap papers with your phone camera. The form saves as you go, so you can leave and come back.

  • How the vehicle was bought: new from a dealer, imported (foreign used) or locally used for its first registration.
  • The chassis number (VIN) and engine number.
  • The make, model and year of manufacture, and the vehicle category: private, commercial, government or diplomatic.
  • The owner’s full name as on the purchase papers, NIN, address, phone and email. A commercial vehicle also needs the owner’s BVN.
  • The purchase receipt or invoice.
  • The customs duty papers, for an imported vehicle.
  • An insurance certificate. Third-party cover is the minimum.
  • The owner’s ID and passport photograph.
  • The state where you want it registered.

Questions

Things people ask about new vehicle registration.

What do I need to register an imported vehicle?

Everything on the list, plus your customs duty papers. Upload the customs release and duty receipts with the other documents.

Does the chassis number have to match?

Yes. The chassis number and engine number on the form must match the vehicle and your purchase papers. A mismatch is a common reason for delay, so check them before you submit.

Is the vehicle licence the same as registration?

No. Registration is the first step: it gives the vehicle its plate number and records you as owner. The vehicle licence is then renewed on a cycle. You can start that renewal on Docufy once the vehicle is registered.

Which state should I register in?

Choose the state where you live or will keep the vehicle. The form asks for it, and the price is the same wherever you are in Nigeria.

How long does it take?

This page shows the target time in business days before you start. The licensing office sets the final pace, and you can follow every step on your phone.

An agent can tell you it’s moving. Docufy shows you.

See every field before you pay

Start the filing and fill in everything first. You only pay after you submit, and the price is shown before you do.

It saves as you go

Leave and come back when you are ready. Your form saves as you go, and a copy stays on your phone if you lose signal.

Clear refunds

Cancel a draft any time and nothing is charged. After paying, email us before the partner firm submits and we refund our service fee in full.
