Nigerians abroad don't have to book an embassy appointment for every passport renewal any more. An app now handles the biometric side, for those who qualify.
Here's exactly who that is, and what happens if you don't.
What the contactless route actually is
NIS MOBILE is the app behind this route. It replaces an in-person appointment with an in-app photo, fingerprint and liveness check, done on your own phone.
You still apply and pay on the usual NIS portal first. The app only handles the biometric part that would otherwise need an embassy visit.
That's a meaningful change for anyone who's had to travel a long way to their nearest mission in the past just for a photo and fingerprints.
Who is eligible
NIS built this for Nigerians living abroad only. If you're renewing your passport from outside Nigeria, this is the route designed for you.
It's specifically a renewal tool, not a way to get your first passport from abroad. Nigerians inside Nigeria don't use this app at all, since it's built around the specific problem of renewing without a nearby NIS centre.
Who is excluded, and why
The app excludes first-time applicants and minors. NIS hasn't explained its reasoning beyond limiting the route to renewals.
If you fall into either group, book a standard appointment at your nearest mission instead. Our guide to Nigerian passport fees abroad covers what that route costs.
What happens if the app says you're ineligible
The app checks eligibility using your application ID and reference number before it asks for your face, fingerprints or a liveness check, so you'll know early rather than after finishing the biometric steps.
When the app flags a case as ineligible, NIS's guidance is clear: book a physical biometric appointment at the embassy or high commission.
Don't keep retrying the app at that point. Go straight to the standard booking process instead, since the outcome is unlikely to change on a second attempt.
How far ahead you can start
Up to a year before the passport expires, according to NIS. That's a wide window, so there's no need to wait until your passport is nearly out of date.
Starting early also gives you time for the postal step that follows your in-app biometrics, which our fee and postal-step guide covers in full.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the contactless route covers a first-time or a child's application.
- Retrying the app repeatedly after it flags you as ineligible.
- Waiting until the passport is almost expired before starting.
- Assuming the app works the same way for a first passport as it does for a renewal.
A vetted partner firm can help with the paperwork side of a standard, embassy-booked passport application; the contactless route itself is self-serve, in the app and by post. Our passport hub links every other route too.
