A renewal moves faster when every document is ready before you start the online form. Here is the full list NIS asks for, and where people usually trip up.
This list covers a standard renewal or re-issue, not a first passport, a child's passport or a lost one.
The core checklist
For a standard renewal, gather your NIN slip, an NPC birth certificate or High Court declaration of age, a local government (indigene) certificate, an ICAO-compliant photo and your current passport.
The portal also asks you to upload your current passport's data page directly, separate from bringing the physical booklet to your appointment.
Your NIN slip and why it comes first
A National Identification Number (NIN) is the first thing the portal checks, before it even asks for other documents. Everything you type is compared against your NIMC record.

Your current passport and its data page
Renewal assumes NIS already holds a record from your last passport. The data page is what your new application gets compared against, so any old error on it can resurface now.
Bring the physical booklet to your biometric appointment, even though you also upload the data page online beforehand.
The birth certificate or age declaration rule
This is the document people most often get wrong. NIS asks for those born from December 1992, and accepts a High Court declaration of age as the alternative.
Check which category you fall into before your appointment, not on the day, since the two documents are not interchangeable.
The local government certificate and your photo
A local government, or indigene, certificate is also on the list. If you no longer have the original, your local government office is the place to request a fresh one.

What renewal does not ask for
Unlike a fresh adult application, a standard renewal's document list does not include a guarantor's form. Don't spend time chasing one you don't need.
If your situation involves a name change from marriage, a lost booklet, or a child's passport, treat it as a different process with its own document list. Applying the wrong checklist to the wrong situation is a common reason people arrive at the office with the wrong papers.
Keep copies before your appointment
Photograph or photocopy every document before you travel to your appointment, not only the originals. If something is queried on the day, having your own copy on hand avoids a second trip home to fetch it.

Common mistakes with renewal documents
- Assuming an expired local government certificate is still accepted without checking.
