The question for anyone heading abroad to study: what do I need from Nigeria before I go? The list depends on the school and the visa route, so planning the order helps.
Three kinds of document
| Kind | Document | Ask the school first |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Passport, NIN | Does it set a validity limit? |
| Character | Police certificate | Is it asked for at all? |
| Academic | Certificates, transcripts | Notarised, authenticated, or both? |
Every institution sets its own list. Use this as a Nigerian-side checklist, and confirm each item with the school or visa office you are dealing with.
Identity: passport and NIN
NIS renews passports whether they have expired or are still valid. So you can renew early.
NIS states a renewal target of 21 days after successful enrolment. That is NIS's own target, so leave a margin.
Passport applications start with your NIN. NIS lists a National Identification Number (NIN) as a requirement, and the first portal step is to verify it. If your NIN details are wrong, it can help to fix them first: NIS compares your passport data with your NIMC (NIN) record. Why passport renewal needs your NIN to match explains why.
Renewing takes one visit for your photo and fingerprints. Nigerian passport fees for Nigerians abroad covers the diaspora fees. The passport renewal guide covers the rest.
Character: the police certificate, if asked
Not every school or visa route asks for one. If yours does, eligibility covers Nigerians, and foreigners who have lived in Nigeria for at least 30 days. Fingerprints are taken in person, at the police command or formation chosen during the online application for applicants in Nigeria, so build in time for that appointment.
The school or visa office may set its own age limit for the certificate, and sources give its validity as six months from the date of issue or three months. Ask it before you apply. When to get a police certificate for a job abroad works through the timing, and it applies here too.
Academic and civil papers
School certificates are among the documents a notary handles. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs authenticates educational and legal documents for use abroad. A notary can come first, but nothing we found says the Ministry requires one, so check with the school. Getting a Nigerian document ready for use abroad sets out the steps.
If the school asks for a birth certificate, check which kind you hold. NPC's reprint service suits certificates already in its current system, and reissuance suits older ones. Birth certificate reprint vs reissuance explains the difference. The Ministry's page publishes no fee or processing time, so ask before you plan around one.
Work backwards from your deadline
- Ask the institution for its exact list.
- Fix your NIN first if any detail is wrong.
- Renew the passport if it is close to expiry.
- Book fingerprints if a police certificate is asked for.
- Get the academic papers notarised and authenticated, if you are asked for that.
Several of these steps depend on appointments, or on offices that publish no processing time. This is a working order, not a rule, but starting early helps.
Common mistakes
- Renewing the passport before checking your NIN details.
- Getting the police certificate too early, then finding it is older than the school allows.
- Authenticating every certificate when the school only asked for two.
- Sending originals abroad without keeping copies.
Once you have an offer, documents Nigerians need ready for a visa application covers the visa side. The diaspora and life events hub has the rest.
