Every visa process has its own list, and this article cannot state any country's rules. What it can do is get the Nigerian side ready. Three kinds of paper are worth checking: a passport, a police certificate and civil records.
Nigerian side only
Start by asking the visa office or your sponsor for its exact list. Then use this article to put the Nigerian documents in order. If a country's list differs from what is here, its list wins.
1. A passport in good shape
NIS renews passports whether they have expired or are still valid. So you can renew before you apply if the validity left worries you.
Applications made in Nigeria cost ₦100,000 for five years or ₦200,000 for ten, before bank charges. NIS's own renewal target is 21 days after successful enrolment, which is not a promise, so leave a margin before any visa deadline.
NIS lists a National Identification Number (NIN) as a requirement, and it compares your old passport with your NIN record during renewal. Fix any NIN mismatch first. Why passport renewal needs your NIN to match explains why. The passport renewal guide covers the steps.
2. A police character certificate
Some visa processes ask for one. To apply you need an ID: a NIN, BVN or international passport. The police say to pay online through the POSSAP invoice only.
Fingerprints are taken in person, at the police command or formation chosen during the online application, so applicants in Nigeria make one visit. The fee is unconfirmed: a civic guide and one news report give ₦30,000 while other sources differ, so read the amount on the POSSAP invoice before you pay.
A vetted partner firm can file the application. Start a police certificate request. For timing, see when to get a police certificate for a job abroad. Whether the receiving side wants the certificate authenticated is its decision. Authenticating a police certificate abroad covers that step.
3. Civil records and matching names
Birth and marriage certificates are on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' list of documents it authenticates. Notaries also handle passport data pages and police clearance certificates. Getting a Nigerian document ready for use abroad sets out the steps.
Check that your name is spelt the same on every paper you will submit. If it is not, fix that first. Your name doesn't match across your documents covers the fix. After a marriage, see the order to change your name after marriage.
An older birth certificate may need NPC's reissuance service. Birth certificate reprint vs reissuance explains the difference.
A working order
- Get the visa office's list.
- Fix any NIN or name mismatch.
- Renew the passport if it needs it.
- Apply for the police certificate and book fingerprints.
- Get what the list asks for notarised and authenticated.
- Check whether the receiving side adds a step of its own.
Treat this as practical sequencing, not a rule.
Common mistakes
- Starting authentication before you know which papers the visa office wants.
- Getting a police certificate so early that it is stale by the time you submit.
- Using a passport whose name does not match the birth certificate.
- Assuming Nigerian authentication is the final step.
