The two fees FRSC charges
A Nigerian driver's licence comes in two terms. FRSC charges ₦15,000 for 3 years and ₦21,000 for 5 years. These are the government fees only, and a payment channel may add its own charge on top.
The same two figures apply whether you are renewing an existing licence, replacing a lost one, or holding your very first licence. What changes by class is the amount, not the term structure itself.
What the extra cost buys you
Paying more upfront for the 5-year term buys you two things: fewer trips to a capture centre over time, and one less application to fill in. Over 10 years, a 3-year term means renewing three times. A 5-year term means renewing twice.
That matters if work keeps you away from your state, or if long queues are hard for you to plan around. It matters less if you expect your details, such as your name or address, to change soon.
Working out the cost per year
Spread each fee across its term and the 5-year licence works out cheaper per year of validity, even though the upfront figure is higher.
| Term | Fee | Renewals needed over 10 years |
|---|---|---|
| 3 years | ₦15,000 | About 3 |
| 5 years | ₦21,000 | 2 |
Why each class is billed on its own
FRSC charges for each licence class separately. A driver who holds both a car licence and a motorcycle licence pays for both, not one combined fee. The motorcycle class A carries its own, lower price, covered in our guide to the class A licence fee.
If you're not sure which classes you actually need, our explainer on licence classes walks through what each letter covers.
Which term suits which driver
Consider the 3-year term if you expect a change soon, such as a name change after marriage, or if a smaller amount now suits your budget better than a larger one.
Consider the 5-year term if you want to renew less often and your details are unlikely to change. For most private drivers, it is the better deal over time.
You choose your term when you apply, either directly on the FRSC portal, nigeriadriverslicence.frsc.gov.ng, or through a vetted partner firm on the driver's licence renewal page, where the government fee, service fee and VAT show before you pay.
Common mistakes
- Assuming both terms cost the same each year. They don't. Work out the cost per year before deciding.
- Forgetting that each class is priced on its own. A combined car-and-motorcycle licence costs more than either class alone.
- Ignoring the payment channel's own charge. Banks, POS terminals and eWallets can each add a small amount on top of the government fee.
