An out-of-date address on your NIN rarely causes a problem by itself, until another process checks it against a newer document. Updating it is one of the more straightforward NIN modifications.

When an address update actually matters
Your NIN address matters most when something else checks it: a loan application, a bank update, or a new SIM registration. If nothing is currently asking for it, there is no urgency, but an old address can slow down whichever process asks for it next.
If you have moved more than once since you first enrolled, only your current address needs to be on file. You do not need to document every previous move.
An address update is also usually less demanding than a name or date of birth change, since you are not proving a change in your legal identity, only where you currently live.
Before you start
Have a document that shows your new address ready to upload, such as a utility bill or a tenancy agreement. The self-service portal confirms exactly what it accepts once you select an address update.
Log in using the same device and browser you registered your account with. NIMC's rule is the same device and browser used to create the account.
Steps to update your address on the portal
- Log in to NIMC's self-service portal.
- Select the modification option for your address.
- Enter your current address exactly as you want it recorded.
- Upload your supporting document.
- Review every field before you submit, since a typo at this stage is yours to fix.

Paying and confirming the change
The fee for this update is ₦2,000, the same charge NIMC applies to most fields other than date of birth. Pay it once your document is attached.

Common mistakes
- Uploading a document in someone else's name. A utility bill or tenancy document should clearly connect to you, not only to the address.
- Switching devices partway through. Stay on the device and browser you registered with to avoid a lock-out.
- Assuming the update reaches your bank or telco on its own. Update those separately once your NIN record changes.
