NIMC charges ₦28,574 to correct the date of birth on a NIN. That is the standing price for 2026, and it only moves if NIMC reviews its fee schedule again.
The figure surprises people who remember a lower price from a friend's experience or an old blog post. Here is what the fee actually covers, what it replaced, and the rule that catches almost everyone out.
What NIMC charges to correct a date of birth
The current fee is ₦28,574. You pay it on NIMC's self-service portal, using the same device and browser you registered your account with.
This fee is only for the date of birth field. NIMC's price list names a separate, lower fee — ₦2,000 — for other fields such as your name or address. A vetted partner firm can start your date of birth correction once your supporting documents are ready, and NIMC issues the updated record.
What the fee replaced
Before 2 May 2025, the same correction cost ₦16,340. NIMC raised it by about 75% as part of a wider review of its service charges.
Any date of birth correction fee you see quoted below ₦28,574 is out of date, however recent the page looks. Check nimc.gov.ng/fees if you want NIMC's own current number before you pay.
This fee is for corrections made inside Nigeria
The figures above apply to a correction made from within Nigeria. NIMC charges a different, region-based fee for Nigerians correcting a date of birth from outside the country, so treat this page as the domestic price only.
If you are enrolled with a Nigerian address but currently live abroad, confirm which fee schedule applies to you before you start the request, since paying the wrong amount can hold up the submission.
You only get this change once
NIMC allows a date of birth correction only once, whether you use the portal or, previously, an enrolment centre. A second attempt is not refunded and the change is not made, so check every detail before you submit.

When NIMC waives the fee
NIMC's own condition is clear: the correction is free if NIMC made the original error. NIMC has pointed to Article 36(4) of the GAID 2025 as the legal basis for that waiver.

Common mistakes that cost people twice
- Paying twice, hoping a second payment forces approval. NIMC applies its only once rule no matter how many times you pay.
- Trusting an old price. Compare any number you see against nimc.gov.ng/fees, and see our full list of NIN modification fees for how this fee sits next to the others.
- Assuming one payment fixes everything. The date of birth fee and the ₦2,000 fee for other fields are billed separately, so a wrong name or address needs its own request.
- Confusing this with a slip reissue. A wrong date of birth is a modification, not a reprint, so reissuing your slip will not change the date on file.
