What happens at the visit itself
At the office, an officer checks your documents against what you submitted online, takes your fingerprints, and captures a live photo alongside your signature. This is quick compared with the paperwork stage, since most of the decisions were already made online.

Expect a short wait even with a confirmed appointment slot, since offices work through a queue rather than an exact clock. Bringing everything ready, rather than hunting through your phone for a document, keeps your own part of the visit short.
Why this step can't move online
A fingerprint and a live photo need a person and a scanner in the same room. No online form can replicate that reliably, which is exactly why NIS keeps this one step in person while letting everything else run online.
It's the same reason a driver's licence renewal or a police character certificate also needs a visit, while something like a tax clearance certificate does not. The pattern across Nigerian agencies is fairly consistent: a document tied to your physical identity usually needs one, a document that is purely a record or a certificate usually doesn't.

Making the one visit count
Since this is your only trip, treat it as the final checkpoint, not a place to sort out paperwork problems. Confirm your appointment slip, your documents and your photo are all ready the night before, not the morning of.
