Quick answer

Download a fresh copy of your slip in NINAuth, which is free, and read every field. Then match each error to its fix. A date of birth correction costs ₦28,574 and NIMC allows it only once. A name or address costs ₦2,000. A slip reissue only reprints the slip.

Read your slip line by line before you pay for anything. The fix depends on which detail is wrong, and each fix has its own price.

This post helps you match the error to the fix. It is one of our NIN and NIMC guides.

Get a clean copy first

Download your slip in NINAuth at ninauth.nimc.gov.ng. Go to Do More with NINAuth, then NIN Slip, then download. It costs free.

Read every field the slip shows, such as your names and date of birth. Then set the slip beside your birth certificate and one other ID. Circle each difference.

An old paper slip may look different from the new one. If you are unsure it still counts, read is your old NIN slip still valid.

Match the error to the fix

What is wrong The fix NIMC fee
Date of birth NIN modification, allowed once ₦28,574
Name, address or another field NIN modification ₦2,000

Slip lost or damaged, details correct Slip reissue ₦600

For a date of birth, name or address fix, apply on NIMC's self-service portal at selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng. Our guides cover each one: name after marriage, address, phone and email and photo.

Which errors a reissue will not fix

A reissue reprints your slip with whatever is already on file. If the name on the old slip is wrong, the new one will carry the same wrong name.

Use a reissue only when the details are right and the paper is lost or damaged. Otherwise correct the record first, then get a fresh slip. The post on modification vs slip reissue explains the difference.

Check three things before you pay

  1. The evidence. Compare the slip with your earliest birth document. Do not change a record to match a document that is itself wrong.
  2. The price. NIMC's fees changed on 2 May 2025. Check nimc.gov.ng/fees. If a quote looks odd, read how to spot a fake NIMC website.
  3. The limit. NIMC allows a date of birth change only once. TechCabal reports that a payment for a later change is not refunded and the change is not made.

If NIMC made the mistake

For a date of birth, NIMC has confirmed the correction is free if NIMC made the original error. Reports do not say how to claim it. Keep the papers you handed in at enrolment, because they show what you supplied.

That confirmation covers dates of birth. If the wrong detail is a name, ask NIMC before you pay. See the free date of birth fix for how the waiver works.

Several errors at once

Other fields cost ₦2,000. If several details are wrong, check the total the portal shows against the fees page before you pay.

If a name and a date of birth are both wrong, work out which record you can prove first. Only one date of birth change is allowed, so that one needs the most care.

Common mistakes

  • Paying for a reissue to fix a wrong detail. A reissue reprints the same record.
  • Using your one date of birth change on the wrong record. Check the evidence first.
  • Fixing a name to match a document that is itself wrong. Start from your earliest document.
  • Guessing the total. Check the amount the portal shows before you pay.
  • Ignoring a photo that no longer looks like you. It is a separate change, and it needs a visit.

Ready to fix it? Start a NIN modification with Docufy. It collects your details in the right format, a vetted partner firm files it, and NIMC decides it. A NIN modification needs no office visit unless you change your photo.

Questions people ask

Will a slip reissue fix a wrong name on my NIN slip?

No. A reissue reprints the slip with the details already on file. Correcting a detail is a NIN modification. See NIN modification vs slip reissue.

What if NIMC made the error?

For a date of birth, NIMC has confirmed the correction is free if NIMC made the original error. Reports do not say how to claim it, so keep the papers you gave at enrolment.

Do I need a new slip after the correction?

Download a fresh copy in NINAuth once NIMC has updated the record. It costs free, and it should show the corrected details.

Can I fix a wrong photo online?

A new photo is the one change that needs a visit. See how to change the photo on your NIN.
