A police character certificate starts online, on possap.gov.ng. This is the Nigeria Police Force's own portal for the character certificate and its other fee-based services. Here is the order the application actually runs in.
Step 1: open the form and enter your details
The POSSAP form asks for your full name, phone number, email, gender, state, LGA and residential address. It also accepts a NIN, BVN or international passport as your identifying document.
Use the spelling on your chosen ID exactly. A name that reads differently across your documents is one of the more common reasons an application gets stuck.
Step 2: state your reason and add a photograph
Guides describe the form asking for a stated purpose, such as a visa or a job offer, plus a recent passport photograph. If your embassy or employer gave you specific wording for the purpose, use theirs rather than your own summary.
Step 3: pay the invoice on POSSAP
Payment is online through the POSSAP invoice only. The police say a request attracts a one-time, non-refundable fee, and that you should not pay anything extra at a police formation for fingerprint capture or for collecting the certificate.
For more on the fee itself and why to confirm it on your invoice, see how payment works.
Step 4: book and attend fingerprint capture
Once payment clears, the remaining step is fingerprint capture. Prints are taken in person, at the police command or formation chosen during the online application. This is the one visit the process needs, and there is no way to skip it, since the certificate depends on a records check against your prints.
Bring the same ID you used on the form, since a mismatch at this stage can send you back to the form.
What happens after you submit everything
The police's own guidelines say processing takes at least 72 hours, counted from when every requirement, including your fingerprint capture, is complete. Treat this as the police's stated claim rather than a fixed promise, and start well ahead of any visa or job deadline.
Common mistakes on the POSSAP form
- Guessing at the ID field. Only a NIN, BVN or international passport count. A voter's card or a driving licence is not on that list.
- Skipping straight to a police station. Nothing on this process starts at a police formation. It starts on possap.gov.ng.
- Paying a third party "to speed things up". The police state payment goes through the POSSAP invoice only.
- Leaving the purpose field vague. If a visa or job needs a specific wording, use it.
Once your certificate is ready, it applies to whatever you stated as your purpose.
