Two filings that sound almost identical can mean quite different things to CAC. Knowing which one you actually need saves a wasted trip through the portal.
What counts as a change of directors
A change of directors covers someone joining or leaving the board: a new appointment, a resignation, a removal, or a death.
Each of these changes who is legally responsible for running the company. That is why CAC treats an appointment with real weight, including requiring the new director's written consent to act.
CAC change of directors: the deadline covers this filing in full, along with the documents each side needs to provide.
What counts as a change of particulars
A change of particulars is narrower. Nobody joins and nobody leaves. You are correcting or updating a detail for a director already on the register, most often a residential address.
Updating a director's address with CAC walks through this specific case, since it is the most common reason to use this filing.
A misspelled name or an outdated identification number on file can also fall into this category, though the correct route for a serious error is worth confirming with a company secretary first.
Why CAC holds both to the same deadline
Despite the difference in what each filing does, CAC's law puts them under one heading: any change in the register of directors or residential addresses. Both are filed within 14 days of the change.
That shared deadline is easy to miss if you assume a "smaller" change gets more leeway. It does not. The clock runs the same way regardless of which of the two you are filing.
The paperwork each one needs
An appointment needs a new director's consent to act, plus their identification and signature. An exit needs a record of why the office ended: a resignation letter, removal minutes, or, in the hardest case, a death certificate.
A change of particulars needs much less. You are amending one field on an entry CAC already holds, so there is no new consent to gather.

Picking the right filing for what actually happened
Ask one question first: has anyone actually joined or left the board? If yes, you are filing a change of directors. If the board is unchanged and you are only correcting a detail, it is a change of particulars.
Getting this distinction right before you open the portal saves you from starting the wrong form and having to begin again. Up-to-date annual returns and PSC information either way, so confirm your company's own filing history is current before you start.
Once you know which filing applies, documents to change a company director lists what to gather before you open the portal. The CAC registration hub links the rest of this series.
