Cause one: your NIN doesn't match
This is the most common stopping point. Your NIMC (NIN) record, so any difference between your form and NIMC's record, even a small one, holds up the application.

Cause two: a non-compliant photo
The second most common cause is a photo that doesn't meet a recent colour photo on a white or off-white background, without glasses, at least 600 x 800 pixels. Glasses, a busy background, an old photo, or a resolution that's too low can each bounce an otherwise complete application.

Cause three: the wrong renewal reason
The portal asks why you're renewing, with options for an expired passport, one that's still valid, pages that are full, or a damaged or lost booklet. Picking the wrong one can send your application down a path that expects different documents from what you actually have.

Cause four: paying the wrong way

When the cause is more serious
A small number of rejections aren't clerical at all. Section 10 of the Immigration Act 2015 covers holding more than one valid standard passport, making a false statement to get one, submitting multiple applications, and concealing the loss of a passport, among other offences.
The stated penalty for these runs up to 10 years' imprisonment, a ₦2,000,000 fine, or both. If you're tempted to submit a second application because the first seems stuck, don't; fix the original instead of creating a second problem alongside it.
Working through a stuck application
Start with the most common cause, your NIN match, then work down the list above. Most stalled applications resolve once the specific mismatch or document issue is corrected, without needing to start over completely.
