The national price
FRSC's national price for a dealer's number plate is ₦100,000. This is part of the fee list the Joint Tax Board approved nationwide, in force from 8 Jun 2025.
A dealer's plate lets a registered motor dealer move vehicles still in their stock, without registering each one to an individual owner first.
Where Lagos disagrees
Most plate types match exactly between FRSC's national list and Lagos MVAA's own schedule. The dealer's plate is the exception.
| Source | Dealer plate fee |
|---|---|
| FRSC national price | ₦100,000 |
| Lagos MVAA's June 2025 schedule | A higher figure than the FRSC price |
Neither source states that the other is wrong or out of date. Until that is resolved, treat both figures as a starting point rather than a final answer.
How to confirm the price that applies to you
Ask directly at a licensing station before you pay. Lagos runs any of 140 licensing stations, designated banks, or online at portal.autoreg.ng, and any of them can confirm the figure currently being charged.
If you deal in vehicles across more than one state, do not assume the Lagos figure travels with you. Each state licensing authority can set its own schedule on top of the FRSC national list, and dealer plates are exactly where that shows up.
Keep a written record of what you were charged and where. A dealer moving stock between states benefits from being able to show which schedule applied to which vehicle, rather than relying on memory months later when a query comes up.
Who actually needs this plate
A dealer's plate is for a registered motor dealer's own stock, not for a private buyer. If you are buying a single car for yourself, you do not need one; your vehicle gets its own registration and standard, fancy or out-of-series plate instead.
Dealers typically renew or apply for these plates through the same state licensing channels that handle other vehicle registrations. A dealer's plate also does not carry over to the buyer; once a vehicle is sold, it needs its own registration and its own plate in the new owner's name.
Common mistakes
Assuming the FRSC figure is automatically what Lagos will charge is the main one here, since this is one of the few plate types where the two lists genuinely disagree. Paying whichever number an agent quotes without checking it against a station is the second.
Treat a large gap between what you are quoted and either published figure as a reason to ask more questions, not a reason to pay faster.
