What a new fancy plate costs
A fancy plate, sometimes called a customised or personalised plate, carries your own choice of letters and numbers rather than the standard sequence. FRSC's national price for a new one is ₦400,000.
Lagos MVAA's own schedule for a new registration lists the same figure, ₦400,000. Both prices took effect from 8 Jun 2025.
This is a plate fee only. The vehicle licence, and any other registration charges your state applies, are separate.
Converting or replacing an existing fancy plate
A fancy plate is not always bought fresh. Some owners convert an existing standard plate to a fancy one later, and some need to replace a fancy plate that was lost or damaged.
Lagos MVAA prices these differently from a brand new fancy plate:
| Situation | Fee |
|---|---|
| New fancy plate on a fresh registration | ₦400,000 |
| Converting an existing plate to fancy, or replacing a lost fancy plate | ₦200,000, plus other registration charges |
Confirm the exact figure at a licensing station before you pay, since a schedule can be updated after it is published.
Why the national and Lagos prices match
FRSC sets the number plate price nationally, and Lagos has adopted the same figure for a new fancy plate rather than pricing it separately. That is also true for a standard plate and an out-of-series plate.
A dealer's plate is the exception among these, where Lagos and the national list disagree. Always check which plate type you are pricing before assuming two lists match.
How a fancy plate is ordered
You request a fancy plate when you register a vehicle or go through your state's vehicle licensing process. Your choice of letters and numbers has to be checked for availability first, since a combination already taken or restricted cannot be issued twice.
Expect this to take a little longer than a standard plate, since the plate itself has to be produced to your specification rather than pulled from stock.
Have a second and third choice of characters ready before you apply. If your first choice is already taken or falls foul of a restriction, having a backup ready avoids a second trip to sort out the paperwork.
Common mistakes
Assuming a fancy plate and an out-of-series plate are the same thing is a common mix-up. They are priced and processed separately, even though both stand out from a standard sequence.
Paying a middleman a price well above the published schedule is another. Confirm the current figure with your licensing station first, especially since conversions and replacements are priced differently from a new plate.
Treating the fee as the final cost is a third. Add the vehicle licence and any other registration charges your state applies before you budget for the whole exercise.
