The standard motorcycle plate fee
FRSC's national price for a standard motorcycle number plate is ₦12,000. This is part of the fee list the Joint Tax Board approved nationwide, in force from 8 Jun 2025.
This is lower than a standard car plate, reflecting the separate pricing FRSC sets for motorcycles across its whole list, not only for the standard plate.
The fee covers the plate itself. Registration, and the vehicle licence that follows, are billed separately.
Where the fancy motorcycle price gets confusing
A fancy motorcycle plate, like a fancy car plate, lets you choose your own combination rather than taking the next one in sequence. It costs more than a standard motorcycle plate.
Here is where you need to be careful: FRSC's own list and at least one state's published schedule do not agree on exactly how much more. Rather than quote a figure that one of the two sources disputes, the honest answer is that you should confirm the current price with your registering station before you commit to a fancy motorcycle plate.
This is similar to the situation with a dealer's plate, where a state schedule and the national list can genuinely disagree, so it pays to check rather than assume.
Who registers a motorcycle plate
Anyone bringing a motorcycle onto the road for the first time, or moving it between owners, needs it properly plated and registered. This applies whether the motorcycle is for private use or for commercial work such as okada or delivery riding.
Registration happens through FRSC's nvis.frsc.gov.ng, which also handles new vehicle registration, revalidation and a list of approved centres, or through your state's own licensing office.
Documents to have ready
Bring proof of purchase, your own means of identification, and any documents your state licensing office lists for a new registration. A motorcycle without a clear paper trail is harder to register and harder to resell later.
If you are buying a used motorcycle, ask the seller for these documents before you pay, not after. The government fees tool is a quick way to check what else a registration usually adds.
Common mistakes
Assuming the motorcycle plate fee matches whatever a car costs is the first mistake; FRSC prices them separately, and a standard car plate is priced well above the motorcycle figure. Accepting a fancy-plate quote without checking it against your state's own schedule is the second, given the two sources do not always agree.
Skipping registration altogether because a motorcycle "only needs a plate" is the costliest mistake. A plate without proper registration behind it is a problem waiting to surface at a checkpoint or at resale.
