Getting your first driver's licence through a driving school

A first driver's licence in Nigeria starts at a driving school, not the FRSC portal. Why, and what happens once you have your certificate number.

Quick answer

A first driver's licence starts at a driving school, not the FRSC portal directly. FRSC needs a certificate number from a driving school FRSC has approved before it opens a fresh application, and most first-timers then choose class A, class B, or both.

Why a fresh application is not a renewal

A renewal needs your existing licence number and your NIN. A first-time application needs more. FRSC will not open a fresh application until you can show a certificate number from a driving school FRSC has approved.

This catches out people who assume a first licence works the same way as a renewal, just without the old card to reference. It doesn't. The portal expects a certificate that simply doesn't exist until you've completed training somewhere FRSC recognises.

The driving school certificate you need first

Before you touch the portal, complete training at a driving school. Finishing gets you a certificate number from a driving school FRSC has approved, and that number is what starts your application, not your name and date of birth alone.

Ask the school directly whether it appears on FRSC's list before you pay for training, so you're not left holding a certificate the portal won't accept. It's a five-minute question that can save you from repeating a course.

Starting your application with that certificate number

Once you have the certificate, the application itself runs on the same FRSC portal, nigeriadriverslicence.frsc.gov.ng, that renewals use. You enter your certificate number, your details, and the classes you want, then pay before booking your capture.

Nothing about the rest of the form is unique to a first-time applicant. The certificate number is the one field that separates a fresh application from every other kind.

The two classes most first-timers choose

A first-time application is usually capped at two classes, most often class A (motorcycle) and class B (private car). If you only plan to drive a car, class B alone is enough, and there's no rule that says you must apply for two just because you're allowed to. Our guide to licence classes sets out what every letter covers, in case you're unsure which one fits.

What happens after the portal accepts your form

From here, a first-time application follows the same shape as any other: payment, then one in-person visit for a photo and fingerprints at a capture centre. FRSC produces the card centrally afterwards, at its own pace.

The certificate number is what the portal checks against before it lets a first-time application through, so treat it as essential as your NIN or your phone number on the form.

Keep your certificate number and your application reference somewhere safe. You'll want them if you ever need to query your application, or to verify your finished licence on the FRSC verification portal once it's issued.

Questions people ask

Can I apply for my first licence without a driving school certificate?

No. FRSC needs a certificate number from a driving school FRSC has approved before it opens a fresh application.

Which classes should a first-time applicant choose?

Most choose class A, class B, or both, since a first application is usually capped at two classes.

Is a first-time application different from a renewal?

Yes. A renewal only needs your existing licence and NIN. A first-time application also needs the driving school certificate.

Where do I apply once I have my certificate?

On the FRSC portal, the same one renewals use, where you enter your certificate number and your details.
