The private motorcycle fee

A private motorcycle's vehicle licence in Lagos costs ₦625. This is MVAA's own price.

It covers a motorcycle used for personal transport. It does not cover one used for paid passenger or delivery work.

This fee is separate from the motorcycle number plate fee. FRSC prices that plate nationally, on its own list.

Budget for both fees as part of keeping a motorcycle legal. The plate and the licence are two different charges, from two different lists, and neither one covers the other.

Private vs commercial rates

MVAA does not charge every motorcycle the same rate. A commercial motorcycle costs more to licence than a private one:

Use Vehicle licence fee
Private ₦625
Commercial (such as okada) Higher, confirm at a licensing station

Does your motorcycle change from private use to commercial use, or back again? Check with a station which rate now applies before your next renewal.

This split is not unique to motorcycles. Lagos also prices commercial cars, buses and other vehicle classes differently from private ones, so the same logic applies across the wider vehicle licence system, not just to bikes.

Where to renew

You can pay online. Portal.autoreg.ng takes the payment. You then collect your printout at a station.

You can also do the whole thing in person. Lagos runs any of 140 licensing stations, designated banks, or online at portal.autoreg.ng.

One more rule to know. Since 1 September 2025, a Payer ID, NIN or NIN-linked phone number is required for any renewal paid through AutoReg.

Keep your payment reference safe. Hold on to it until you have the physical licence document in hand.

What to bring

Bring your motorcycle's registration document. Bring your own means of identification too.

A station may ask how the motorcycle is used day to day. Answer this honestly, since your answer decides whether you pay the private rate or the commercial rate.

A motorcycle that is genuinely private should not be billed at the commercial rate. If that happens, query it before you pay, not after.

Keep your last renewal receipt too, if you have one. It helps a station confirm how your motorcycle was classed last time, which speeds up an otherwise straightforward renewal.

Common mistakes

Assuming every motorcycle pays the same fee is the first mistake. Lagos clearly splits private use from commercial use, and the two rates differ.

Not updating your paperwork when a motorcycle's use changes is the second mistake. Your bill and your actual use can then fall out of step with each other.

Forgetting that the plate fee is separate from this one is the third mistake. Budget for both, rather than assuming one figure covers the whole job.

Questions people ask

Why is the commercial rate higher?

MVAA prices a motorcycle used for commercial work, such as okada riding, differently from one used only privately, the same way it treats other commercial vehicle classes.

How do I know if my motorcycle counts as private?

If you are not registered or operating it as a commercial passenger or delivery vehicle, it is priced as private. Ask your licensing station if you are unsure.

Is the number plate fee included in this price?

No. The motorcycle number plate fee is billed separately from the vehicle licence.

Where do I renew?

Online at portal.autoreg.ng, with the printout collected at a station, or in person at any of 140 licensing stations, designated banks, or online at portal.autoreg.ng.
