NIMC runs two services that people mix up. The self-service portal is where you change details on your NIN. NINAuth is NIMC's identity app, and it is where you download your slip.
Here is which to use for each job. It is part of our NIN and NIMC guides.
The short answer
| You want to | Use | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Correct a name, date of birth or address | Self-service portal at selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng | ₦28,574 for a date of birth, ₦2,000 for other fields |
| Download a copy of your NIN slip | NINAuth at ninauth.nimc.gov.ng | free |
| Retrieve a forgotten NIN | USSD code *346# | About ₦50 |
The self-service portal
The portal handles changes to your record. Since 2 Oct 2024, NIMC directs all data changes there, not to enrolment centres.
It has one rule you need to know. Your account is tied to the same device and browser used to create the account. Clearing your browser cache can lock it. After five failed attempts, only NIMC's formal unlinking process restores it.
Our post on being locked out explains the route back. Registering on the portal shows how to set the account up on a device you will keep.
One change still needs a visit: a new photo. See do you need to visit NIMC.
NINAuth
NIMC formally launched NINAuth on 30 Oct 2025. You can get the app on Google Play and the Apple App Store. NIMC's NINAuth address is ninauth.nimc.gov.ng.
The feature to know is the slip. In the app, go to Do More with NINAuth, then NIN Slip, then download. It costs free. Our post on downloading your slip free has the steps.
At the launch, the President said all ministries, departments and agencies would be required to adopt NINAuth for staff and data verification. That is a direction for government bodies.
For changes to your details, NIMC points you to the self-service portal, not to NINAuth.
If you cannot use the app, a slip reissue is the paid route. It costs ₦600, and our reissue cost post has the detail. NIMC's notice on the portal also warns against unauthorised look-alike sites.
The USSD route
If you only need your NIN number, you need neither service. Dial *346# on any network, from the phone number linked to your NIN. It costs about ₦50.
See how to retrieve a forgotten NIN by USSD for the details.
Which one for which job
- Your name, date of birth or address is wrong. Use the portal. Read the modification guide first.
- A bank or employer wants a copy of your slip. Download it in NINAuth.
- You forgot your NIN. Dial the USSD code.
- You changed phones. The portal may not recognise your account on a new device, because of the device rule. Plan for it before you switch.
What about the older portal and app?
Technext reported in November 2025 that NIMC's older portal was returning errors and the earlier NIMC ID app had left the app stores. It is not confirmed that NINAuth replaces them. If an old link fails, use the addresses above.
Common mistakes
- Paying for a slip you can download free. The NINAuth download is free.
- Following a link to a look-alike site. NIMC warns against unauthorised look-alike sites. Type the address yourself. See how to spot a fake NIMC website.
- Clearing the browser cache on the phone you used for the portal. The device rule can lock the account.
- Looking for an edit button in the app. NIMC sends data changes to the portal.
If you would rather not use the portal yourself, a vetted partner firm can file a NIN modification for you. NIMC decides it, and no office visit is needed unless you change your photo.
