The number you see on the NIS portal at checkout is not always the last one you will ever pay for that passport. It is the booklet fee, and it covers less than people assume.
Here is what is bundled into that figure, and what shows up separately.
What the booklet fee actually pays for
₦100,000 or ₦200,000 pays for standard processing of 32 pages with 5-year validity or 64 pages with 10-year validity. That includes your biometric capture and the booklet itself once it is produced.
It does not include anything that goes wrong afterwards, or anything faster than the standard route.
Extra charge one: correcting a data error
If a name, date or other detail is wrong on your new data page, that is treated as a separate service. NIS charges ₦30,000 for it, and the charge is described as non-refundable.

Extra charge two: courier delivery
The portal asks how you want to receive your finished booklet. One choice is courier delivery for an extra fee, instead of collecting it yourself.
We could not find a published courier price in NIS's own materials, so treat the exact figure as something to confirm at the point you choose it, not something to budget for in advance.
Extra charge three: the premium service
NIS also offers a faster route it calls the premium service, which within 48 hours of submission. The fee for this is shown when you book it, not on the standard fee list.

Bank charges sit outside all of this
NIS's own fee notices describe the booklet prices as excluding bank charges. Whatever gateway or mode you pay through may add its own small charge on top, separate from anything NIS itself sets.
Check the final total the portal shows you before you approve payment, rather than assuming the headline fee is the whole bill.
Keeping your total to just the booklet fee
Most renewals never touch the extra charges above. Submit accurate details the first time, check your photo against NIS's own rules, and collect the booklet yourself.

Common mistakes with these charges
- Assuming the courier fee is small because NIS doesn't publish it; confirm it before choosing that option.

- Mixing up the premium service with faster ordinary processing, when it is a distinct, separately priced option.
