What an articulated vehicle plate costs
FRSC's national price for an articulated vehicle's number plate is ₦90,000. This is part of the fee list the Joint Tax Board approved nationwide, in force from 8 Jun 2025.
For comparison, a standard car plate costs ₦30,000 on the same list. The gap reflects a separate tariff for heavy and articulated vehicles, not an error or a state mark-up.
This fee covers the plate only. Registration, weighing and the vehicle licence for a heavy vehicle are all separate charges.
Why heavy vehicles pay a different tariff
FRSC classes vehicles differently for plate pricing, and an articulated vehicle, such as a trailer or long-haulage truck, sits in a class of its own. The plate itself is also a different, larger format from a car plate, which is part of why the price differs.
This tariff structure is consistent nationally. Unlike a dealer's plate, where FRSC's national list and a state schedule can disagree, the articulated vehicle fee is not flagged as a point of dispute in the current fee list.
Who this fee applies to
This fee applies to trucks, trailers and other articulated vehicles registering for the first time, renewing, or getting a plate re-issued. Haulage and logistics operators running a fleet will meet this fee once per vehicle, not once per fleet.
A single articulated vehicle is still one registration and one plate, even if it operates across several states. That is a different position from a standard car plate, priced and processed on its own separate list.
Registering an articulated vehicle plate
Registration happens through FRSC's nvis.frsc.gov.ng or your state's licensing office, the same channels used for a car. Bring the vehicle's ownership documents and any weighing or classification paperwork your state requires, since a heavy vehicle is checked differently from a car at registration.
Keep your receipt and registration documents together. A fleet operator dealing with several vehicles benefits from a clear paper trail more than a single car owner does, since a missing document is harder to trace back months later.
Budget for the vehicle licence on a heavy vehicle separately too. It follows its own tariff, distinct from both the plate fee here and the tariff a car owner pays.
Common mistakes
Assuming a heavy vehicle pays the standard car rate is the most common mistake, given how far apart the two figures are. Budgeting for the plate alone and forgetting the vehicle licence and other registration charges is another.
Treating a quote far above ₦90,000 as normal "because it's a big truck" is a third. The fee is fixed nationally, so a large gap is worth questioning before you pay it.
