What MVAA charges to replace a plate
A lost or damaged standard number plate in Lagos costs ₦32,500 to replace, on MVAA's own published schedule. This is separate from a fresh standard plate fee on a new registration.
An articulated vehicle's replacement plate is priced higher:
| Vehicle type | Replacement plate fee |
|---|---|
| Car (standard plate) | ₦32,500 |
| Articulated vehicle | Higher, confirm at a licensing station |
Confirm the exact articulated figure with your licensing station before you pay, since a published schedule can be updated after it is printed.
Before you apply
Report a lost plate promptly rather than continuing to drive without one or with a damaged plate that is hard to read. A plate that cannot be read clearly is a problem at any checkpoint, not only a paperwork issue.
Gather your vehicle's registration documents and your own identification before you travel to a station. Ask what else is needed for your specific case, since a straightforward replacement is not always treated the same as a change of ownership.
If your plate was stolen rather than simply lost, keep any report you filed with the police alongside your other documents. A station may ask for it as part of the record, even where it is not formally required for a straightforward replacement.
Where to apply
Lagos runs any of 140 licensing stations, designated banks, or online at portal.autoreg.ng. Many transactions can be started online at portal.autoreg.ng, with the printout collected at a station afterwards.
Since 1 September 2025, a Payer ID, NIN or NIN-linked phone number is mandatory for renewals and new registrations processed through AutoReg, so have this ready before you start.
What happens after you pay
Once payment is confirmed, your new plate is produced and issued through the station or channel you used. Keep your payment reference and any receipt until you have the physical plate in hand, in case you need to query the transaction.
Fit the new plate correctly and check the details match your vehicle's registration before you drive off. A mismatch is far easier to fix at the counter than after you have left.
Your other papers do not reset because the plate changed. Your vehicle licence, insurance and roadworthiness certificate all keep their own separate expiry dates.
Common mistakes
Continuing to drive with no plate, or a damaged one, while you delay the replacement is the biggest risk. A plate that cannot be read clearly is its own problem at any checkpoint, separate from how quickly you get the replacement sorted. Assuming a car and an articulated vehicle pay the same replacement fee is another.
Paying an agent significantly above the published figure without asking why is a third. Confirm the current price at a station first.
Skipping the NIN or Payer ID step online is a fourth mistake worth avoiding, since a Payer ID, NIN or NIN-linked phone number is required before AutoReg will process your payment.
