Everything about a police character certificate can be done from a phone, except one step. Your fingerprints still need capturing in person.
Why this step cannot move online
A character certificate rests on a records check against your fingerprints. That check needs a real print, taken under supervision, not a photo or a description of one. This is why the process needs one visit, even though the form and payment do not.
Where capture happens
Prints are taken in person, at the police command or formation chosen during the online application. In practice, this points to the nearest police criminal registry, or the specific command or formation you chose while filling in your POSSAP form.
If you are unsure which formation applies to you, check the confirmation you received after submitting your application rather than guessing.
What to bring
Bring the same ID you used on your POSSAP form. If you gave a NIN, BVN or international passport as your identifying document, as covered in which ID works for a police character certificate, carry the physical document or a clear copy.
It is also worth bringing your payment confirmation, in case the formation asks you to show that your invoice is settled.
What happens to your prints afterwards
Your prints are submitted alongside your application so the police can run their records check. That check runs across police records, not at a single desk, which is why it is not a simple paperwork step.
Nothing extra to pay here
The police are specific on this point: you should not pay anything extra at a formation for fingerprint capture, or for collecting your certificate afterwards. Every legitimate charge for the certificate runs through the POSSAP invoice, covered in how payment works.
If anyone at a formation asks for cash beyond what your invoice already covers, that request sits outside published police guidance.
The diaspora exception
Applicants based outside Nigeria face a harder version of this step, since a formation visit is not always practical from abroad. Reported guidance points to a certified fingerprint chart from local police, arranged through a Nigerian mission, though this route is not something the police have set out in full public detail. Confirm the current expectation with your nearest mission before relying on it.
Common mistakes at this stage
- Turning up without your ID. The same document from your form is what your prints get matched against.
- Going to the wrong formation. Use the one confirmed on your application, not the nearest one by habit.
- Assuming a second, unofficial payment is normal. It is not, per published police guidance.
