Two figures circulate for how long a police character certificate takes. Neither is this site's own estimate, and neither is a promise you can hold the police to.
The police's own claim
POSSAP's guidelines state at least 72 hours. Leadership reported the same figure on 30 July 2026. This is the police's own stated position, which is why this article treats it as a claim rather than a confirmed average.
The clock, as described, starts once every requirement is complete, including a finished fingerprint capture. Submitting the form is not the starting point.
A longer figure, reported separately
Pulse Nigeria, in an August 2026 report, gives a noticeably longer stretch after biometrics than the police's own claim. It describes several working days rather than a couple.
This site will not turn that description into a precise number of its own, since Pulse's own wording is a range, not a fixed count. What matters is the direction: expect longer than the police's stated minimum, not shorter.
This site cannot say which figure your own application will match. Both are included here so you can plan for the slower end rather than the faster one.
Why a records check is not a desk filing
A character certificate depends on checking your fingerprints against police records, not just reviewing a form. That is manual work across a records system, which is a reasonable explanation for why estimates vary and why the police describe their own figure as a minimum ("at least" 72 hours) rather than a fixed turnaround.
What can add time on top
A few things push any estimate out further:
- An incomplete fingerprint capture. The clock, per the police's own wording, only starts once this is done.
- A mismatched name or ID. See which ID works for a police character certificate for avoiding this.
- A missed or rebooked appointment. Every rebooking resets how soon your capture is actually complete.
Planning backwards from your deadline
Take whichever figure you plan around, then add a buffer rather than applying to the exact day. Our guide on certificate validity explains why applying too early can also cause problems, so the aim is the middle of your window, not either extreme.
Common mistakes on timing
- Treating 72 hours as a countdown from submission. It is not; capture has to be finished first.
- Booking a visa appointment with no buffer at all. A single delay in capture removes your margin entirely.
- Assuming every applicant gets the same figure. Two reported ranges exist for a reason.
